I remember when the TRX400EX came out back in 1998, and Dirt Wheels could not stop raving about it and saying "replace your tired old 250R!" I distinctly remember them drag racing a 400EX against a 250R, and trying to sugar-coat the 400EX's loss. It's just funny to me than Honda built a machine so dominating that they themselves can't beat it. The 400EX in my mind was not even in the 250R's league and while the 450R may be faster stock, it falls behind when engine modifications are made.
My friend had a 400ex before the 450's came and we'd watch racing on TV and I'd shove it in his face when a 250R would win despite the dirth wheels articles telling you how the 400 was a reaplcement for the 250R. I would leave him so far behind on sand hills in glamis I could turn around and face the hill to watch him come up behind me is how bad that 400 sucked in the dunes - granted my R ran pretty well, but still it would take massive effort to get that pos to compete with a decently tuned 2stroke with a stock cylinder. He rides an 88 R today. Dirt wheels had it wrong then, and I don't know why they'd be more trustworthy today.
