Has anyone found a close match for the 86-87 (85 ATC for that matter) engine case? It appears to be a darker gray metallic.

Was the kicker painted the same color from the factory.

Any help appreciated.

I get asked this all the time. I wish I had the answer. I have a couple new 86-7 case parts. I will take one down to pepboys and see if I can find a match. If not, there are some auto paint stores around here. Maybe I can get someone to match it that way. Anyone can try that I suppose.

I painted my freshly rebuilt bottom end and cylinder of my 86 TRX250R this past weekend. I had the paint matched by a local Dupont dealer as close as possible.

The paint was Dupont Nason Acrylic Enamel. This is what they recommended for the application. The paint code was MM605. That is the only code on the can. I mixed in a hardener at a 1:8 ratio.

It came out beautiful, though probably a hair darker than stock. The hint of gray/green is there too. I will post pics next time I'm out working on it. It is definitely way glossier than stock, though. It should dull a little when it heats up for the first time.

I can post spraying pressures and nozzle type if anyone is interest.

Cool!! Ya cases are done in like a stain sheen I think... Thanks for the info. I wonder if a stock spray can can be matched to that color or not. Thanks again.

Well, I too have been asked that question from time to time.
I usually try to just simply go with NOS parts or near perfect used stuff for a factory match on this metallic gray color.
On occasion when I've been ordering powder from Columbia Coatings, I'll get a sample of what appears to look close from their site pictures. I haven't spent a hole lot of time or effort on this yet, but just played around with a few choices. Here is what has turned out the best for me so far. Columbia calls it "Gun Metal Gray". It's a bit darker, shinier, and has a very light texture. So, not a 100% match here either. It's on the right in all 3 pictures, next to a '86 ATC 250R sprocket cover off of a survivor, original untouched bike. My lighting is as bad as my photography (lol, sorry). I've noticed the TRX covers I've ordered, are a good shade lighter than that of the original installed ATC piece shown here on the left. Now these TRX covers were ordered in the last couple years as NOS replacement parts, so maybe the secondary parts color is off some what straight from Honda?? Just thought I'd share. Keep up the good work fellas!

Ok, I believe I found the perfect match in a Duplicolor spray can. I describe my findings in this other thread from Andy. When I get the engine done I'll post pics so we have something finished documented.
